When Siobhan and I first lived in Cambodia there was an ice-cream factory just down the road from the slum where we were living. On one of the outside walls there was a painting of eight different types of ice-cream. When it is hot in Cambodia it gets really hot, so going past those pictures every day got you hungry to try them. Outside of the factory in the shops all we seemed to be able to buy were only two of the types of the ice-creams displayed so one day we spontaneously went to the factory itself to ask to try the other ones. The factory manager we met gave an embarrassed laugh and said that they hadn’t been developed yet but that we could try one of the two types they had…
Having come from the West where it is against the law to advertise something that doesn’t exist, at first we felt upset, but after we had reflected on it we rather liked the idea of the hopefulness that having the pictures of eight types of ice-cream suggested. It kind of said “We’re not there yet but that IS where we are heading”. It’s a bit like the Love146 strap line; ‘The abolition of child sex slavery and exploitation. Nothing less’. We’re not there yet but that IS where we are heading and with your help we are pulling ALL the stops out to make it happen.

Although CSEC is considered as child labour, and indeed one of the worst forms of child labor, in terms of international conventions, in legislation, policy and programmatic terms, CSEC is often treated as a form of child abuse or a crime. calgary mccall
