How Tina Fey Ruined My DATE NIGHT Posted by Lamont Hiebert

<!--StartFragment-->

I know, I know, we don’t go to the movies for moral inspiration. We go to enjoy a good story, to escape, to feel, to laugh, and for the most part that’s exactly what I did during the movie “Date Night” recently. Unfortunately, Tina Fey crossed a line and ruined my date night.

“Work the pole like a runaway,” Tina Fey says in a scene in a strip club. I winced, remembering that 1 in 3 runaways in America are recruited by a sex trafficker within 48 hours of becoming homeless. At the end of the movie (during the outtakes) Tina Fey adds, “work that pole like a Russian Immigrant,” solidifying the fact that she is poking fun at victims of sex trafficking.

How do I know this? Well the term “runaway” obviously implies a child, especially in this context. And lets remember why runaways often end up in vulnerable situations; many are trying to escape domestic or sexual abuse in their homes. According to U.S. federal law anyone less than 18 years of age engaged in commercial sexual exploitation is considered a victim of “domestic minor sex trafficking.” Tragically, the average age of entrance into the “sex industry” in America is 13. Many are lured into commercial sexual exploitation through coercion and violence and are beaten if they aren’t making “customers” happy. Here are 2 quotes from young American victims of sex trafficking.

“When I went to clubs, I had to tell people I fell off stage because I had so many bruises in my ribs, face and legs.  He would watch me or have me watched by someone else to make sure that I was working and not trying to run away.”

“He would decide what I ate, how my hair would look, and what I wore. I felt like a slave. I wanted to be loved. That’s what I was searching for. I wanted someone who would always be there for me because I never, ever had this.”

So yes, Tina Fey, you accurately revealed the fact that runaways are found in strip clubs. You also correctly pointed out that Russian immigrants are exploited there as well (often due to fraudulent claims made by criminals offering legitimate jobs in hotels, hair salons or elsewhere.) Moreover, as everyone knows, the exploitation of sex trafficking victims goes far beyond dancing in strip clubs into forced prostitution.

Tina Fey, shame on you for making a joke at the expense of women and girls who are beaten, drugged, enslaved and raped for another’s profit. That’s like making a joke about victims in Auschwitz, Sudanese women suffering in Darfur, or victims of genocide in the Cambodian killing fields. Make no mistake, sex trafficking and the violence associated with it is as vile as any other human rights atrocity this world has ever seen. Pleading ignorance is not an option here. You and your writers knew, at least in part, what you were joking about.

Sex trafficking is grim reality, not comedy.

Amen to that!

I too was offended at this, and I hadn't even heard of Love146 yet. I am new to this cause, and am eager to help out.

I fully agree.

I have been a supporter of Love 146 and I love reading your blog. That comment struck a nerve with me as well. I still love Tina, but that was out of line.

oh no!

I didn't know they had something like that in that movie. That is extremely heart breaking and I am growing tired of the jokes made of such instances. They then tell me to lighten up for taking things too seriously, but it is issues like this that need to be taken so seriously!!! Thanks for informing me about this. I hope this message goes across to Tina Fey in some way too.

i get disturbed when i hear

i get disturbed when i hear jokes about it in movies or television shows (and i don't even watch it often). it's similar to the video games my brother plays that deal with war and combat. somehow and in someway we've created entertainment out of human suffering. i grimace when i hear my brother's excitement when he has "destroyed" an enemy. war is someone's reality, it's not a game. as the same when people make jokes about being trafficked or a sex slave. perhaps that is how we've been conditioned to deal with the atrocities that are in the world. however it's not helping the situation but rather numbing our hearts and compassion to the evil reality that others face.

Not convinced

Understandable passion here, but don't think Tina Fey was "poking fun at victims of sex trafficking", as much as making an observation of life and using oft-used comic trick of saying the allegedly unsayable or inappropriate… Perhaps it’s cheap humour, but it’d be hypocritical if I didn’t admit to laughing. Comics/actors/filmmakers often criticized for attitudes/comments/morals, but not sure they are best place to direct our ire: sure they highlight things, but they mostly reflect them.

Let's remember it wasn't ALL

Let's remember it wasn't ALL Tina Fey here - she was saying the lines the WRITERS put in the script. Maybe Hollywood writers should go on strike again...I wouldn't mind.

Thanks -

Great post, Lamont. Just wanted to say, thanks for the inspiration. http://humantrafficking.change.org/blog/view/is_there_room_for_humor_in_...

Maybe that's why the 2nd to

Maybe that's why the 2nd to last sentence says, "you and your writers."

my blood is boiling! wrong

my blood is boiling! wrong though it may b i have the desperate desire to grab some ppl and shake them until they get a clue. like u said no one would ever joke about victims in Auschwitz, Sudanese women suffering in Darfur, or victims of genocide...how the heck can ppl even think for a moment that joking about children in the sex industry is funny...

When Humour Goes too Far

I think that Tina Fey, along with other comedians, would brush this off by saying, "well we make fun of all kinds of situations and people, that is what we do, no need in getting offended." The problem with that mentality is that it normalizes the horrifying experiences trafficked girls have. I do think there is such a thing as humour going too far. And there is only so far you can use the excuse "but we're being sarcastic" or "we are merely making a statement about the way the world is." This being said, Hollywood glamorizes prostitution and pimping. In that environment, it would be easy to get lost in the 'humour' of it. Maybe we need to contact her and let her know. How else would she find out? Michelle Brock

Where is the line?

I agree there is a point where the line is crossed. This is a situation where I think it's debatable. But comedy could be an approachable way of provoking thought about difficult issues.

Like you said, it IS obvious that a runaway is a child. Could comments like this be less 'normalizing' of this issue and more highlighting the reality of what a strippers background may likely be? Perhaps her outtake comment replacing the line with 'Russian Immigrant' simply reinforces that she was, in fact, intentionally choosing a trafficking victim. Her intent isn't entirely clear; but she doesn't seem oblivious.

I also notice that other topics you mention, and many see, as being 'off limits' for humor are actually made fun of (or more accurately, satirized) quite often.

What about this making fun of both child slavery and aids?

or this satirizing some aspects of the Darfur issue?

I think the question is WHERE is the line?

sex trafficking

I have information no One will respond to.

Rather oddly, at the same

Rather oddly, at the same time as you, I posted something with an almost identical theme on our blog spot. I totally agree with you. Humour can be incredibly beneficial to make something horrific more readily talked about and processed. There is however a line and this clearly crosses it. Can you imagine if someone was watching that who had been trafficked into the sex industry? Wow, talk about insensitive. For humour to be useful in making human rights abuses more accessible to the general public, it has to have a point and purpose rather than just firing cheap shots.

I agree.

Victoria's comment gives an answer to the question I posed; I think that is a good thought about where 'the line' falls... The examples I referenced didn't seem like cheap shots; Tina Fey's line here definitely was easy and cheap, and it wasn't clear or purposeful. Others? When does humor about global issues (mostly issue involving the mass destruction of human lives) crossed the line?

Tina is a sad insecure person

i can't belive Tina said "working the pole like a Russian immigrant" in "date night" why is that ok? it is prejudiced and unacceptable..I was mortified...does she hate russian women? that was the only thought that crossed my mind when she uttered those words.. it is so hurtful and inapproriate..i thought you were better than that...i will never watch anything you are part of ever again you are a prejudiced sad person Tina...get over your insecurities

Russian Immigrant

It is absolute AWE that I am hearing from the "great Tina Fey" that you should use that "pole like a Russian Immigrant" My wife has a Ph.D in economics and has the highest level of mathematical training achievable and is from Novosibirsk, RUSSIA! RUSSIAN IMMIGRANT WOMEN and MEN ARE NOW reduced in the eyes of North American people to be perceived as Strippers and pole dancers ? This is intolerable and disgusting and everyone should always STAND UP for the innocent! TINA did NOT stand up for Russian immigrants she made them ALL appear as PROSTITUTES! Shameful! I thought better of Tina Fey before this. Not saying anything to stop abuse is ALLOWING IT TO HAPPEN! I AM A MAN AND I AM DISGUSTED, I STAND UP FOR THOSE THAT NEED THE STRENGTH! I AM NOT RICH NOR FAMOUS, BUT I STAND UP! TINA FEY OWES RUSSIAN IMMIGRANTS A HUGE APOLOGY/ not an acted well scripted "funny" comedic one either! A heart felt one! Goodbye!

Russian Immigrant

LMFAO! I was googling for some quotes from the great "Date Night" when I stumbled upon this... whatever-it-is... and Oh. My. God!! I cannot believe you think Tina Fey deliberately mocked sex trafficking. LOL!!! Dear Lord! For a second there I thought she was only playing with stereotypes on russian women. But I'm probably wrong - she most likely just wanted to diss victims of sex trafficking. Wow! I honestly feel bad for you, man (and that date of yours). I wish people didn't dig for excuses over personal failures that deep.

Lighten up!

Oh my God, I am soooo sick of the "victim" bandwagon everyone jumps on. It's a comedy. I seriously doubt that Tina Fey OR the writers think sex trafficking is okay. Some people need to get a life and LIGHTEN UP!! I thought the entire movie was hilarious and when they kept saying "zip your vagina" I laughed the hardest. Oh sorry, am I supposed to be all offended because I'm a woman and that is so sexist? Uh, no.

responding to Angie

Hi Angie, Actually I thought "zip your vagina" was funny as well. I never mentioned that as an issue. This is not about a prudish stance against sexual humor. I just think the majority of people have NO IDEA how brutally victims of sexual exploitation are treated. We work to prevent trafficking and to restore survivors so it's something we do not take lightly. Obviously, I don't think Tina Fey or her writers hate exploited women and children. I used this as an opportunity to get people thinking. I bet if you do some research you won't find the jabs at sexually enslaved runaways and immigrants all that funny anymore. Also, I'm not sure what you mean by "victim bandwagon". Are you referring to the movement to stop the trafficking and enslavement of 2 million people every year? Sounds like a great thing to be a part of. Jump on!

Hey, you guys know Pole means

Hey, you guys know Pole means a Polish person, right?

Ridiculous. This made me

Ridiculous. This made me laugh. People who actually got offended by her saying this talk about a bunch of whiners and troublemakers. Tina Fey is a comedian. SHE MAKES A LIVING BY MAKING PEOPLE LAUGH. No duh all of the things she says aren't going to be appropriate. Welcome to Hollywood. About the teenage runaways and sex slaves.. I find this to be a little "exaggerated" about the girls having no other choice but enter the world of prostitution. There is no where in america where you cannot get a job at McDonalds. There are other options. We all make choices, and those teenagers make choices to do what they do. I myself was kicked out at a young age also but you dont see me "Working that pole like a runaway/Russian immigrant. I love tina fey, i think she was hilarious in this movie and to all the people that got offended we are in 2011.. I mean look at Lady GaGa. Now she is something to be offended by..

First off, she says 'runway'

First off, she says 'runway' not 'runaway' and secondly when she says Russian immigrant she's not talking about sex trafficking. How can you write a blog about this without checking your facts? Look for the original scripts. Yes, the line is still offensive, but not in the sick way you all see To think. It's just the normal 'comedy' offensive, which is sterotyping and low sometimes. Yet, I don't think you would watch a Movie like this if you were that offended by comedy. Seriously guys, stop blowing it out of proportion and look at the truth!

hi

i agree

gout symptoms

How is it that you can feel offended by some movies? Take the Date Night for example; there is a line wherein Tina Fey delivers a line that indirectly talks about sex trafficking in the country. Some may not notice but a few would, especially if they are wary of the subject and the terminologies that come along with them.

I thought this line was

I thought this line was HILARIOUS! It is after all a movie, you dont blame the actors in war films for murdering people or the actors who are angry or racist in movies for that in real life. Yes its a tragedy but this is the wrong medium to gripe about it, go up the chain, not down.

this should have been an opening to resources, not a put down

of course as everyone who has posted here this is just my opinion. i personally loved the movie and would and will watch it again. i also like tina fey. i will agree that human trafficking in any country and all the horrors this world has/is/and will see are horrible. this though does not mean that someone will not joke about it. them joking about it doesn't stop it from happening or help it happen. I believe in finding ways to stopping such things. all this commentary has done is sway those who are easily swayed, may have not liked tina fey, or hadn't even seen the movie into not liking her / the movie for a joke she made in a production which all the people who were involved in making it apperantly allowed. granted i learned a bit more than i knew before in this blog, it seemed like the point was chastising tina fey for saying what she said instead of directing people to a place where they can sign up and help and be the ones to make a difference. it made the point the fact she could say such a thing and who she is, not an opening for those who wanted information on what to do or how to help.

Uhm.

The writers put that in. It wasn't Tina Fey's fault.

I actually was upset when I

I actually was upset when I watched this movie for the second time. I actually have a Russian girlfriend who is very dear to me and was a victim of sex trafficking. She is happily married now with kids and living a normal life. Shame on you Tina fey

Yall take this tooooo

Yall take this tooooo serious,,But Im sure had it been some reference to Christianity it would be all cool huh???...It is a COMEDY, if u have no sense of humor dont watch it.& for the record that Russian immigrant crap was not put IN the movie, it was on the GAG reel, & the comment about the runaway seriously I feel sorry for whoever suffers from abuse, I have suffered abuse BUT was WISE enough to walk away, BUT on another note there are other options than STRIPPING!!!!!!! NO one makes runaways strip & not ALL do, its by there on choice n stupidity! There are other HONEST jobs out there & also shelters, sooooo yall seriously need to find someone else to down,,Dont hate on her cause shes makin an honest livin n u were never brave enough to do such!! Why arent yall more worried about the Rapture?????

At best her line was

At best her line was un-PC--at worst it was insensitive. There is a common myth that Russian women immigrate to the US and they are beautiful and get into sex work by themselves. I don't believe anyone, including Ms. Fey, would "joke" about sex trafficking and child exploitation. Let's save our outrage for actual offenses such as the lack of governmental and legislative INaction about this issue.
